2007 Annual Report

In 2007, the Kansas Turnpike Authority completed its Wider Ride Project, providing a six-lane driving experience for travelers between its East Topeka and Lecompton interchanges.

Immediately on the heels of that project comes another major undertaking: the Kansas River Bridges Replacement and Plaza Improvement Project. This project will be the largest in Turnpike history and will cost approximately the same amount - $140 million - as the construction of the entire 236-mile roadway in the mid-1950s. In the midst of much scrutiny of the nation's infrastructure, the KTA remains vigilant to continue its scheduled improvements of Turnpike structures on behalf of the safety and productivity of its customers.

Work on the Emporia Interchange continued in 2007. This area is a vital link for the movement of people and goods through the state, acting as an economic junction with federal, state, county and city roadways connecting to the Turnpike in this area.

Faced with ongoing roadway upkeep and ever-rising gasoline prices that discouraged travelers, the KTA continuously sought ways to trim its operating budget without decreasing customer service. Challenged by this extra initiative, Turnpike employees undertook new tasks while fulfilling the KTA's mission to provide high quality transportation services for the lowest reasonable cost.
